Firmly cementing our place as the fastest-growing domain and web services platform, Spaceship has hit over 1 million domains under management — and that's only the beginning.
Spaceship's radically different approach is helping more and more web pros, small businesses, and entrepreneurs from around the world get online and grow better.
Since coming out of closed beta on April 16, 2023, Spaceship has hit so many amazing milestones thanks to your support. From Product Hunt brand recognition to launching many innovative products and apps, it’s been a busy but rewarding time.
But while hitting 1 million domains under management is a big milestone for us, what's the significance behind that number? The importance of domains is continuing to grow across the digital world, so what patterns or insights can be gained to help guide your future domain choices?
Diving into the numbers
As the fastest-growing domain and web services platform, Spaceship is perfectly placed to capture new insights into domain market trends. Let's take a closer look at the data.
Transfers vs. new registrations on Spaceship
Of the 1 million domains registered on Spaceship over the past year, 29% were transferred from other hosts, while 71% were new registrations. This shows both seasoned domainers and new domain owners were drawn to Spaceship’s groundbreaking platform and easy transfer process.
New transfer features are also being added all the time, such as ‘DNS Import’ which lets you migrate third-party DNS records for an even more effortless transfer to Spaceship.
The percentage of .com vs. other TLD registrations
When it comes to top-level domains (TLDs) and domain name trends, .com is typically the first choice for many. It’s the most recognizable and trustworthy TLD, giving automatic credibility to any website. That’s why it accounts for nearly half of domains registered on the web.
However, on Spaceship, .com only accounted for 13% of new domain registrations. This doesn’t indicate a slowdown in popularity or a change in hosting industry trends but more likely a lowering of supply. Many good .com domains have already been snapped up.
As a result, people are seeking alternatives, which brings us to our next insight.
The top 20 TLDs registered with Spaceship
This list includes generic TLDs (gTLDs) and country code TLDs (ccTLDs). gTLDs make up the majority of registrations, with .in and .co.uk just about making the cut.
Topping the leaderboard is .shop with a huge 28% of all domain registrations. Although .com is second, there is still a stark difference, with .shop having more than double the number of registrations.
Considering just how ubiquitous online shopping has become, it’s not surprising. With 20.1% of retail purchases expected to take place online in 2024, it’s no wonder people are flocking to e-commerce, locking in their online stores with a .shop domain.
The top 5 countries registering domains with Spaceship
So, where do most of our domain registrants come from? The US leads the charge with 21% of domain registrations, followed by China, which accounts for 11%. This aligns with wider web trends and overall domain registration stats, which also put the US and China at the top.
The top 10 gTLDs
We’ve already looked at .shop and .com, but what about the other contenders? TLDs like .net and .org should be familiar to anyone who spends time online, but .sbs probably isn’t. However, it's certainly gaining popularity, taking 3rd place with 10% of all gTLD registrations.
Launched in 2021, .sbs is short for side by side and is one of the newest web trends for gTLDs. It appeals to community-oriented organizations such as non-profits, activists, and social enterprises.
The top 10 ccTLDs
For organizations wanting local relevance and trust, a ccTLD is a no-brainer. So .in and .co.uk leading the way is in keeping with current industry trends, with India and the UK among the most dominant Internet users.
It’s unlikely that every TLD here is used for domain localization. Although .ai is the ccTLD for Anguilla, most domain registrations are related to artificial intelligence companies. Similarly, .co is the ccTLD of Colombia but is considered a great alternative to the .com domain.
Building the digital future together
It’s certainly exciting times for domains and launching web futures. We’re seeing the emergence of newer TLDs focused on industries and markets, with the traditional king of domains (.com) maybe starting to see its crown slip? The data tells its own story.
Make no mistake, though, hitting the 1 million domain milestone isn’t all about us and our achievements. Spaceship is being specifically engineered to make sure we’re providing exactly what you need. It’s made for you, and with you — so we are building the digital future together. Which means anything we achieve is really thanks to you.
Here’s to the next million or two…or twenty, together.
