How to connect a Spaceship domain name to third-party nameservers

Switching nameservers to custom ones

If you need to change your Spaceship domain’s nameservers to third-party ones, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Advanced DNS page and select the domain you’d like to update.

  2. In the Nameservers section, click on Change:

  3. In the window that appears, select Custom nameservers.

  4. Enter the nameservers provided by the other service provider.

  5. If needed, click + Add nameserver for additional entries.

  6. Click Save nameserver settings to apply the changes.

If your domain is connected to any Spaceship product or already has other DNS records set up, the system will warn you that all active connections — including ones to hosting and email — will be terminated.

If you wish to keep your domain connected to these services, you’ll need to recreate the necessary records on the side of your new DNS provider.

Note: DNS records on Spaceship nameservers won’t be lost — they’ll simply become inactive.

Select Yes, change to Custom DNS to confirm your choice:

Now, you simply need to wait until DNS propagation is complete. This transition period for your domain name may last up to 48 hours. During this time, the connection with the service on your custom nameservers may be intermittent.

Inactive records

If your domain previously had any DNS records created on Spaceship nameservers, you can browse them by scrolling down to the Inactive records section:

DNS records associated with previously-connected Spaceship services will also be displayed there:

You can modify inactive records and save them in an inactive state. This is useful, for example, if you are migrating your website from a custom service to Spaceship hosting and would like the host records to be created in advance to minimize downtime associated with DNS propagation.

Note: If you have switched your domain name to custom nameservers, you now need to manage DNS records for it through your third-party provider. Modifying the Inactive records won’t trigger any changes unless you switch your domain back to Spaceship nameservers. Once you do, these host records will become active.
