Introducing Thunderbolt, a new era in communication from Spaceship

Sometimes it can seem like online communication has grown stagnant. It’s 2025, and most services still require a password, email address, or phone number. Logins can be cumbersome, and security often isn’t up to par. That isn’t even getting into how impersonal it can be.But all that’s set to change with a game-changing new messaging service and comms platform. What if you could call, video, or chat using your domain name instead? With Thunderbolt you can do just that. And it’s free for everyone to use.

Revolutionize how you connect online

With Thunderbolt, you simply need to verify your domain ownership, and you’re ready to connect. It really is that easy. You never need to enter login details again. It’s also decentralized-friendly, supporting Handshake and ENS domains, as well as traditional domains, so your communications aren’t limited by domain type. As long as you have a domain, you can use Thunderbolt. You can even sync it across devices.

Let’s dive deeper into how this unique innovation sets itself apart from other online messaging and communication apps.

You’re a name, not a number

Your domain name is your digital identity, the centerpiece of your online presence representing you or your brand. While phone numbers and email addresses can change and be hacked, as long as you own your domain, you have individual privacy and control over how and where it’s managed.

By using domain names rather than numbers or email addresses, people are more likely to remember your contact information off-hand, as well. Logging in also becomes way easier when you don’t have to remember random login IDs and passwords.

Plus, you won’t face any region restrictions, since all domains are available globally. And much like home addresses, with Thunderbolt’s proprietary DNS, domains are publicly reachable but personally private. Speaking of...

Privacy and security by design

There are numerous privacy and security benefits of using domains instead of phone numbers:

  • No stored messages – messages are not stored on servers, minimizing the risk of data breaches.

  • No passwords – access is based on domain ownership verification (TXT records.)

  • End-to-end encryption –ensures only you and the intended recipient can access messages.

  • DNSSEC protection – keeps your DNS records safe from malicious actors.

All of these security benefits combined make Thunderbolt next to impossible to hack.

A new way to contact businesses

Domains are far more memorable than phone numbers and email addresses, so people are more likely to remember your contact information off-hand. Instead of searching for the right email or phone number whenever someone wants to contact your business, they can just use your brand name. Soon, Thunderbolt will also allow for call and message routing based on subdomains or specific contact points, making communication even more personal and efficient.

Integration with the Spaceship platform

Thunderbolt is part of the ever-expanding Spaceship universe, developed by our team and patented until 2042. So it’s only natural it will become an integral part of the platform.

Currently, Thunderbolt is only available on mobile (both Apple and Android devices) but will be introduced as a web app. You’ll be able to access it in key areas like the Library or Launchpad, empowering you to use your domain for online communication whenever you need it.

Getting started is simple

In three easy steps, you can change how you communicate online forever.

Download Thunderbolt

It’s ultra-quick and doesn’t cost a thing.

Connect and validate

Verify your domain with a TXT record in your DNS settings.

Start messaging

You can now call, video, or chat with whoever you like via their domain name.

Conclusion

Thunderbolt blends innovation, simplicity, and security making for a new era of online communication and messaging centered around your domain. Like all Spaceship-patented tools, it was developed with you in mind, and will be continuously improved based on user feedback.

So try it for yourself and let us know what you think. It’s available for free on Android and Apple app stores now.

Frequently asked questions

Thunderbolt works like many other communication apps. The difference is that you log in and connect using your domain name.

You connect your domain to Thunderbolt by verifying that you are the domain’s owner. This is done by adding custom (randomly generated by the app) TXT records to the domain’s overall DNS records. For a hacker to break into a Thunderbolt account, they need to hack the domain owner’s DNS records. A domain owner can turn on DNSSEC to help prevent this from happening.

On other messaging apps, the user needs to add an email and password, making their account more vulnerable to being hacked if they don’t practice proper password hygiene. On Thunderbolt, no password is required. Some apps also store messages on the server indefinitely, which is not the case with Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt also allows you to sync your account and its data to multiple devices.

Imagine the Domain Name System (DNS) like the Internet’s directory. It’s the system that actually finds the websites you want to visit. It exists because people use words, like website.com. But computers use numbers, like 204.120.0.15. The DNS connects the two.DNS records are like your business listing with the directory. They hold key information like your IP address, mail exchange, etc.

The technical explanation is that it permits the adding and storing of text into a DNS record…The simple explanation is that it verifies your domain by adding a randomly generated code that’s exclusive to you.

DNSSEC is like an extra verification step that happens within the DNS. It identifies the right IP addresses, codes, and records whenever a domain or website is requested (searched for) online. It’s like a domain ID check.

At Spaceship, you can register traditional domains, from gTLDs to ccTLDs. Handshake and ENS domains are not supported at this time.

Can you make this app available on Android 8 Devices at least? If you do so, old version phones can be able to surf over internet again while other social apps don't support for that.

Hi i have a business idea here in Australia that this will be perfect for, as the only people who will use this are the people who would sign up to my website as signing up to my website will have a benefit to them, and when you call someone they will automatically be able to see the other person ? Hello Chris, thank you for your feedback! It's possible to invite website users into Thunderbolt (for example via sub-accounts), and then create Groups or Networks with these users - thus creating a community around the website. At the moment, this association between website users and Thunderbolt accounts has to be managed by the customer and is not automatic. Also, being part of a group or private network does not currently prevent users from contacting others "outside" - meaning users with these sub-accounts may contact anyone with a Thunderbolt domain. More stricter isolation or contact limitations are in store for future updates but we do not have any further specific details or dates yet.

Hello George, thanks for the feedback! We understand that using a domain is a new way to think about messaging. The goal isn't to be 'business-only,' but to give you total ownership of your identity—unlike apps that own your phone number or data. To chat with friends and family: You actually don't need them to buy a domain. You can create Sub-accounts (like https://www.google.com/search?q=mom.yourdomain.com) for them for free so they can join you on Thunderbolt instantly. As for the imagery, we believe everyone—young or old—deserves to own their digital address, but we hear you that the 'pro' requirement can feel like a hurdle. We'll definitely look into how we show this!

This is for me to use my domain name as my user account? So if I'm the CEO of DomainA.com, I can speak as that to someone else that has Thunderbolt set up on DomainB.net? You've got a patent but I'm not sure the marketing material is explaining it very well. So I set it up, downloaded the app, and I have no idea who to talk to.

Hello Chris! Thank you for your honest feedback. You’ve actually described the core vision of Thunderbolt perfectly—it’s just that we need to do a better job of making that clear in our materials! To answer your questions: 1. Is your domain your account? Yes, exactly. Unlike traditional apps where you are "User123" on a private server, Thunderbolt turns your domain into your global identity. If you own DomainA.com, you are the verified owner of that handle. 2. Can you speak across domains? Yes. The "patent" and technology behind it are built on a decentralized protocol. This means you can message someone on DomainB.net directly from your DomainA.com account without both of you needing to be on a third-party platform like Slack or WhatsApp. It’s "email-style" freedom but with "chat-style" speed. 3. Who can you talk to right now? If you have colleagues with domains on Spaceship, you can invite them by their domain handle. Send an invite to anyone else you know who has set up Thunderbolt. We’d love for you to stick around and help us shape the platform.

Hello Joshua Thank you for your question. At the moment to use Thunderbolt you need to download the app or use the web version. However, you can still communicate with people who don’t have their own domain by creating a sub-account for them under your main domain. This lets them use Thunderbolt and interact with you, even without having a separate domain of their own. If you have further questions, please contact our customer support.

Thanks for your interest! Thunderbolt lets your domains become your identity for secure voice, video, and chat—no phone number, email, or password needed. All communication is end‑to‑end encrypted, with no central storage and DNSSEC-backed domain verification, making spoofing virtually impossible. You can use any domain type, sync across devices easily, and offer clients extra confidence that they’re talking to the real you.
